What type of article does the journal accept?
 

For the time being we have established four categories: Critical essay (2,500 to 3,500 words), book review (2,500 to 3,500 words), research article (7,000 to 10,000 words) and dialogue (7,000 to 10,000 words).
Submissions that do not fit these categories or that deal with a region other than the Americas might be considered on the basis of their contribution to the general purpose of the Journal.

What languages are accepted for submissions?
  The languages of IJED are Spanish, English and Portuguese.

What is a critical essay?
  Philosophical, theoretical, or methodological reflections on citizenship education for democracy or problem-posing or heuristic essays for future research agendas.

What is a research article?
  Research of an empirical nature and a theoretical basis; essays (reflections that contribute to reformulating or conceptualizing a problem, topic or methodology, that are part of current debate on the topic and have a pertinent, up-to-date bibliography); educational interventions and a systematization of experiences, aimed at educational innovation or transformation, and including references to other experiences and conceptual debate; studies of an evaluative or diagnostic type that show an innovative theoretical/methodological approach, that have a broad spectrum (national, regional studies) or evaluate the results from different studies; reviews (state of the art or state of knowledge of a topic).

What is a dialogue?
  A document that reproduces an interview or conversation with a prominent figure of the academic world or educational practice that provides a vision, critical reflections or ideas for future development in the field of education for democracy. The text should include an introduction providing the necessary context for reading the dialogue, and a basic bibliography for those who are interested in furthering their understanding of the subjects dealt with in the text.

Must all submissions deal with the Americas?
  Priority is given to authors and topics from countries of the Americas, although articles that address experiences in other nations are accepted if they are illustrative and contribute to current debate on issues in the Americas.

Is it possible to submit articles that have been published elsewhere?
  No, only unpublished material is received.

Do article word limits include bibliography and endnotes?
  No, the limits only apply to the body of the article.

Are there deadlines for submission?
 

Articles can be submitted to the Journal at any time of the year.
If there is a special edition on a particular topic, a deadline for submissions will be set in the call for papers.

How is the article review process?
 

Once submitted, the authors will receive an e-mail with a confirmation that the manuscript has been received and a code number. The articles then move on to two stages of review: a) a first reading by the co-editors to verify if the journal’s requirements are covered; and b) if accepted, external blind review by a minimum of two specialists in the topic. The entire process will preserve the anonymity of reviewers and authors. Except under unusual circumstances, the time period for making a final decision on manuscripts will be no more than 4 months from the date the proof of receipt is issued.

Receipt of work does not imply the journal’s commitment to publish.

How often is the Journal published?
  The Journal is published twice a year.

Is there a printed version of the Journal?
  The first four issues of the Journal will be published electronically. In the future a printed edition might be considered.

What is the copyright policy of the Journal?
  If an article is accepted for publication, its author will cede the right of publication to IJED. Articles may be reproduced in other media, provided that an indication is made that it was first published in IJED

Is there an institutional or individual cost in accessing articles of IJED?
  No, the IJED is free of charge. It is published thanks to the generosity of collaborating institutions and the voluntary work of editors, editorial board, reviewers and authors.
